About Magnum P.I.
Magnum, P.I. is the name of two American crime drama television series: the original, 1980 Magnum, P.I. aired from 1980 to 1988; and the reboot series, which aired for CBS from 2018 to 2022 and NBC beginning in 2023.
As with the original series, Magnum P.I. revolves around Thomas Magnum, an ex-United States Navy SEAL who occupies the guest house on Robin’s Nest, the Hawaiian Estate owned by famous author Robin Masters. In exchange for allowing Magnum to live in his guest house, Masters writes a fictional book series about a “white knight” centered around Magnum’s time in the military. In addition, Magnum works for Masters as a security consultant; despite this, Masters never appears in the series. Also living on the estate are Juliet Higgins, an ex-MI6 agent who serves as the estate’s majordomo, and native Hawaiian Kumu Tuileta, who is the estate’s cultural curator. Magnum’s living arrangement does not come with a salary, so he solves crimes as a private investigator. His investigations often include Higgins, who officially joins him as his partner in the second season. The two are frequently assisted by ex-United States Marines, Orville “Rick” Wright and Theodore “T.C.” Calvin. Rick is now a bar owner, while T.C. is a pilot whose main business is running helicopter tours of the islands. Gordon Katsumoto is a detective for the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) who frequently disagrees with Magnum’s investigative methods, but nonetheless respects his crime-solving expertise.
Despite both having serious relationships throughout the first four seasons, Magnum and Higgins often share sexual tension with each other, which is finally addressed in the fourth season finale. Rick also finds himself in a serious relationship in the latter half of the series, leading to his girlfriend giving birth to their child. Meanwhile, the divorced Katsumoto often faces trouble with his son, and T.C. becomes a father figure to a homeless teenager in the fourth season.
The show shares a direct fictional universe with Hawaii Five-0. The six main characters of Magnum P.I. share many allies with the Five-0 Task Force, including further law enforcement professionals, confidential informants, and city employees.
Magnum, P.I. is the name of two American crime drama television series: the original, 1980 Magnum, P.I. aired from 1980 to 1988; and the reboot series, which aired for CBS from 2018 to 2022 and NBC beginning in 2023.
The original series was created by Donald P. Bellisario starred Tom Selleck as Thomas Magnum, a private investigator based in Oahu, Hawaii. Magnum lives on the estate of multi-millionaire author Robin Masters (Orson Welles), who is never there. Magnum’s daily life involves him butting heads with the estate’s butler, Jonathan Higgins (John Hillerman), and investigations throughout Oahu, in which he is aided by his close friends, Theodore “T.C.” Calvin (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick Wright (Larry Manetti).
The reboot series was developed by Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim. It follows the same premise as the classic series, with actor Jay Hernandez portraying Thomas Magnum, and Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins (the new series’ version of Higgins). Four full seasons have aired so far and decided to cancel the series, but it moved to NBC.

Trivia
Credits: Magnum P.I. Official IMDb
Set in the same universe as JAG, First Monday, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Scorpion, Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Hawai’i.
There are some crossovers between Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-0. Lieutenant Yoshi Tenaka states in the first episode, “if this is a kidnapping, it belongs to HPD and Five-O, not some private eye.” Appearances are made by Kimee Balmilero as medical examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha, Katrina Law as Five-O’s Agent Quinn Liu, and William Forsythe as former private eye Harry Brown, who was close friends with Steve MacGarrett’s father. Finally, Taylor Wily returns as Kamekona for several episodes.
Thomas Sullivan Magnum is the full name of the lead character. As of the end of season 2, he is not related to the original Thomas Magnum.
In the first episode, Magnum crashes a different model of Ferrari than what was used on the first version of the show. When Magnum checks out another Ferrari the producers pay homage to the original series by using a 1983 308 GTS QV with the license plate reading “Robin1.”
In the original TV series, there is no mention of Magnum saving Robin Masters’ life in Vietnam. In fact, the premise of the show is that Magnum works as head of security on the estate, and he spends every opportunity trying to discover Robin’s true identity, and trying to confirm one of his beliefs that Higgins and Robin are the same person.
At 40, Jay Hernandez was older than Tom Selleck when he first portrayed Thomas Magnum (35 years old). The character is supposed to be in his early 30’s in both series.
In the original series, Higgins is a man, played by John Hillerman. In this show, Higgins is a woman.
The Hawaii 5-0 episode “Kanalu Hope Loa”, (season 5, episode 3), could actually be retrospectively seen as the first cross-over episode, within the (new) Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum PI, as this is the first time we see actress Amy Hill, as an unnamed tour guide. She would later appear in Magnum PI as the named character “Kumu”, so its now easy to retro-fit the character history so that the tour guide is actually Kumu, as it would clearly tie-in to her work with the Cultural Centre, mentioned in dialogue in Magnum PI.
Larry Manetti and Roger E. Mosley, who co-starred in the original show as Rick and TC, make several guest appearances in this remake series.
Kumu is Hawaii’ain for elder or master.
Detective Gordon Katsumoto (played by Tim Kang) in this series is named after Lieutenant Gordon Katsumoto, the character played by Clyde Kusatsu in two episodes of the original series, starting with This Island Isn’t Big Enough.
Set in the same universe as the O’Loughlin series of Hawaii Five-O despite the Five-O crew gushing at the end of an episode about their love of the Selleck TV series of Magnum P.I.
NBC has ordered two seasons of “Magnum P.I.” following the drama’s cancellation at CBS in May after a four-season run. The broadcaster has ordered 20 new episodes of “Magnum P.I.,” which an option for more, and intends to break those up into Seasons 5 and 6 of the series.
With regards to the wasting of tax dollars, the following applies: Hawaii is not part of the mainland continental United States, so everything has to be imported by sea and air, and as a result, Hawaii’s Cost of Living will be higher than the national average. Due to that reason, the State of Hawaii needs to provide tax credits to these production companies to defray the cost of filming, otherwise it is cheaper to film elsewhere. That being said, the production companies hire local crews which brings jobs to the community and the shows serve as an hour-long television commercial which draws tourists into the state. Thus, these decisions to allocate tax dollars are not made lightly, it is a question of whether the benefits outweigh the costs.
