Incorporating Juliet Higgins’ Style: understanding the Essence of Her Fashion and Integrating It into Your Wardrobe

Juliet Higgins, portrayed by Perdita Weeks in Magnum PI, is known for being an elegant and sophisticated woman with refined taste. This can be seen through her musical preferences, culinary choices, knowledge of sophisticated drinks (wines!), books, and stories… As well as her good manners (especially when it comes to knowing exactly how to use each utensil and glass at the table. Remember her first “date” with Magnum?). And so on.

But this captivating character cannot be simply summed up by that. As soon as the “ice” starts to melt (because she uses this barrier as a defense mechanism, as Perdita herself has mentioned in some interviews), we can see a more sensitive and even romantic side of her (I know many of you may not like to be reminded, but in season 3, we can already see this with Ethan. For example, in the episode where they are all trapped in La Mariana waiting for the storm to pass, she dries Ethan’s face with a towel after seeing him all drenched in rain. In that scene, she showed her soft side, showing that she cares about small gestures). Anyway… This was just a segue for you to better understand that a person can have an elegant and also romantic personality (among others). In fact, the romantic style can be seen in Higgins’ outfits since the first season, which makes us wonder: was the clue that she has always had a soft right there? Could it be?

In this article, we will identify Juliet Higgins’ styles and teach you how to incorporate them into your daily life if you resonate with them (or if you simply want to be Higgy Baby for a day).

I have gathered some photos of Juliet’s outfits in season 1 to analyze elements that characterize the romantic style (or feminine, as it is also known): curved lines – here, they can be found in the necklines of blouses, the tips of the shoes, and the silhouette of the clothing. Floral or polka dot patterns. Light and flowing fabrics. Another point to note is the hair, with long strands and curved lines represented by waves or curls. As for colors, they are more dramatic, with earthy tones and incorporating black in the compositions. This marks a characteristic of the boho style (which has some elements of the romantic style as well). Another characteristic that is also found in the boho style is the tie-up feature in blouses, for example, which gives a more sexy vibe (let’s make it clear that this is my personal interpretation).

Identifying the character’s styles is synonymous with understanding the key attributes in their clothing and image that speak of their personality, that are important and represent their personal visual identity. It is crucial for you to understand that this is not an exact and absolute definition. It is possible that the costume team did not consider any of the aspects I am analyzing. It could be that what they had in mind was something completely different. Or it could be nothing more than clothes that are “in fashion” and suit the character. However, analyzing styles is fun (and we have a long break ahead, so let’s entertain ourselves), and I will continue along this path, leaving you to ponder whether this analysis makes sense to you or not.

To understand about styles and the reason why we analyze them:

Regarding clothing, in a very objective manner, styles classify the similarity of visual elements through lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns. Style is connected to BEING, and that is what sets it apart from the concept of fashion. Fashion reflects the time in a political, social, economic, cultural, and geographical context. Therefore, it is related to a society or a particular group of people. In a style analysis, clothing and fashion are used as tools to manifest people’s style. Style is the translation of personality into appearance. Our personal style is built from childhood, based on external influences (mothers, friends, teachers, people who inspired us), our environment, and our experiences. It is a reflection of our way of being, thinking, acting, and consequently, dressing. By the time we become adults, a significant part of our personality is formed, and therefore, our essence style as well.

If we delve deeper into this subject, this already lengthy article will become even longer, and we haven’t even started analyzing Juliet! If you’re interested, I recommend reading the articles “An approach to the problem of costume and personality” and “Are You Yin, Madame, Or Are You Yang?” by Professor Belle Northrup from Columbia Teachers College. Additionally, you can explore the concept of the 7 universal styles (which I won’t discuss here).

If you (the reader) wish to undergo a style analysis, it is essential that it be conducted assertively. Experts use strategic questionnaires, interactive panels, and so on. Here, we are only analyzing Juliet’s style for fun, but your personal analysis should be taken seriously by a professional who understands the subject (as it relates to your self-esteem, after all).

Unlocking the Style Secrets of Juliet Higgins

How her personality is reflected in her personal fashion style?

Let’s divide Juliet into two personas: the first one when she’s working on a case with Magnum, and the second one when she’s at La Mariana, enjoying a peaceful day at Robin’s Nest (and so it goes). In one scenario, she prefers comfort and discretion (since she is working on cases) while maintaining an impeccable appearance in her outfit selection, and, of course, many elements of her personal style are present in her clothing. In the second scenario, it’s easier to identify her style based on the elements. In both cases, her appearance is always impeccable (there’s no button out of place or any wrinkles on her dress shirts, for example).

(Persona 1: in action)
(Persona 2: chilling out)

That being said, I’ll venture to say that Juliet has a strong presence of Boho style, as well as Romantic style. And Refined style as well. And I would even dare to say that this is the same style as Perdita Weeks (romantic/boho style with a urban style twist), but that’s a topic for a future post because it will be lengthy (since I’ll have to bring pictures and facts to justify my guess)…

The Boho Style

First, let go of the idea of Coachella-like festivals, for example. This style is not limited to something very stereotypical. Boho is more than just a specific type of clothing item; it encompasses colors, attitude, and fabrics as well.

Boho originated from a more hippie-like style, but it has evolved today. You can clearly see romantic elements (as I mentioned earlier, Higgins also has a romantic style), modern touches, and elegance. Some people incorporate boho only in details, showcased in accessories (earrings, a hat, or oversized glasses). – Read the article I wrote about the necklaces that Juliet Higgins wears, as I analyzed the Boho style in them.

Colors are also fundamental in this style: natural and lighter tones convey its comfortable and cozy side very well. Some people also incorporate black touches into boho, making the outfit more dramatic.

Other characteristics include: wide-leg trousers, cropped pants (made of denim or linen), long or midi skirts.

Clothes with tie-up details, especially in earthy colors, make the outfit more sexy.

As for shoes, flats and sandals, or boots. But for Juliet, she never says no to a wedge heel, right? However, pay attention to one detail: the toes of her shoes are always rounded. This is a characteristic of the romantic or feminine style. In this photo next to it, Juliet is wearing a “flat sandal,” which is not very common, but we found an outfit of hers with this style (very boho).

The Romantic and/or Feminine style

Think of all the visual stereotypes of femininity? There you go, you’ve identified a Romantic or Feminine style. The colors here are cheerful, softer tones, conveying messages of delicacy and sweetness (oh, hello, Higgins from Season 4).

(Credit: NBC / Season 4, Ep1)

The clothing silhouettes feature puffed sleeves, ruffled dresses, flared and full skirts, round necklines… And floral prints, polka dots, and so on. (Higgins doesn’t use all these elements, of course, just like she doesn’t incorporate all the elements of the boho style).

As for fabrics, they are lightweight (just like in boho) and gently hug the body.

Pay attention to the details: embroidery, lace, embellishments, bows, ruffles…

“Ah, but Juliet wears suits, dress shirts…” Yes! Because the Refined style is part of her. It is possible to mix romantic with refined and maintain balance. Thus, we have a distinctive look with a style that easily conveys an image of credibility, authority, and sophistication, while the other one sends a message of softness, warmth, delicacy, and accessibility (feeling the Higgins vibes here?). Yin and yang, opposites complement each other. Nevertheless, the refined style does not overshadow the romantic or boho. For example, its main element is straight lines, while Juliet uses “a lot of curves” as a foundation. One of the things we notice that she has embraced from the refined style, recently, is jewelry. Her necklaces (in Season 4 and Season 5A) are minimalist and discreet, but they used to be bolder. In Season 2, she incorporated colors and layers (hello boho style)…

You will notice that Higgins lets one style prevail over the other several times in her outfit choices. This has to do with the message she wants to convey to the world on that particular day. One day, she may be entirely romantic. The next, she may be entirely refined. We saw episodes in Season 5A (Ep 4 – NSFW and Ep 6 – Dead Ringer) where she is completely formal. And others, like Season 4 Episode 2, where she is all girly, with floral prints and even a tiara in her hair.

Girlie style (romantic)
Formal style (refined)

After all, as mentioned earlier, fashion is a form of expression. And the character’s wardrobe is crucial in demonstrating what she is emotionally feeling at that moment. With that said, now comes the reflection: what did Higgins want to convey with her outfits during this period? Take a break to rewatch all the episodes (after all, you can never have enough Magnum PI) and try to analyze the situation by comparing it to the outfit she is wearing.

Juliet's hair

With her wavy hair gracefully cascading over her shoulders or reaching chin-length, she exudes a captivating aura that echoes the romantic style. Let’s explore how this hairstyle influences her image and the symbolism it holds within her personality, which is simultaneously elegant and full of attitude.

Juliet’s wavy hair plays a pivotal role in her romantic appearance. Whether it’s defined waves with curls or looser, more natural waves, they add a touch of softness and femininity to her overall image. Well-defined waves communicate a sense of classic elegance, while looser and more natural waves contribute a carefree and bohemian flair. Regardless of the specific wave pattern, they evoke timeless romance, evoking subtle charm and grace.

Beyond its influence on the romantic aesthetic, Juliet’s wavy hairstyle reveals symbolic aspects of her personality. The waves represent a freedom and fluidity that reflect her determined and courageous attitude. They symbolize a willingness to adapt to change, navigating life’s twists and turns with grace. Juliet is a woman who embraces her romantic side but also possesses an inner strength that enables her to face challenges with elegance and confidence.

Juliet’s romantic image, combined with her determined attitude, unveils a unique and multifaceted personality. Her elegance conveys a sense of sophistication and refinement, while her resilient and courageous demeanor adds a touch of authenticity and empowerment. She personifies the notion that softness is not synonymous with fragility, but rather a reflection of her inner strength and confidence.

... the delicate braid

With her Season 3 signature delicate braid adorning her hair, she exudes a captivating charm and embraces a romantic image that goes beyond mere aesthetics.

Juliet’s choice of a delicate braid speaks volumes about her commitment to beauty and attention to detail. The intricate weaving of her hair conveys a sense of elegance and femininity, aligning perfectly with the romantic style. It evokes a timeless appeal, reminiscent of a bygone era, where grace and sophistication were held in high regard. This hairstyle choice showcases Juliet’s appreciation for the subtle nuances of beauty, emphasizing her eye for the delicate aspects of life.

Beyond its aesthetic impact, the delicate braid carries symbolic weight within Juliet’s personality. It reflects her gentle and romantic spirit, infusing her presence with an air of softness and dreaminess (let’s remember that during Season 3 -when she sported this hairstyle frequently – Juliet allowed herself to open up to love after so many years. She allowed herself to live a love story – even though you may not want to remember Ethan, he was a fundamental part of her journey, including leading to a relationship with Magnum. In this season, she lived a fairy tale: falling in love and allowing herself to dream). This hairstyle suggests that she finds solace and joy in life’s simple pleasures, possessing a profound appreciation for nature, art, and the wonders of the world. The braid symbolizes her connection to her inner child, a symbol of innocence and purity that radiates through her personality.

Furthermore, the delicate braid denotes Juliet’s nurturing and caring nature. Braids, particularly those created with meticulous precision, require patience and dedication. They signify a willingness to invest time and effort in crafting a beautiful outcome. This characteristic aligns perfectly with Juliet’s role as a compassionate caregiver and her commitment to helping others. Her delicate braid becomes a visual representation of her nurturing spirit and her desire to create beauty in the world.

Now, lets talk about how to incorporate Higgins' style into your everyday life.

Embrace Flowy Silhouettes: A fundamental aspect of the boho chic and romantic style is the presence of flowy silhouettes. Opt for skirts with a mid-length or maxi length to exude a touch of femininity. Pair them with loose-fitting blouses or fitted tops to create a balanced and flattering look. Juliet Higgins often opts for flowing skirts that emphasize her graceful demeanor.

Floral Prints for a Feminine Touch: Floral prints are a quintessential element of the boho chic and romantic style. Incorporate them into your wardrobe through dresses, blouses, or skirts. Look for delicate and intricate floral patterns to capture the essence of romance. Juliet Higgins frequently dons floral prints (specially in season 4 – where she found out she was deeply in love), adding a whimsical and feminine touch to her outfits.

Embrace Earthy Tones: Boho chic style is characterized by a warm and earthy color palette. Opt for natural hues such as olive green, mustard yellow, rusty red, and warm browns to create a bohemian vibe. These colors provide a harmonious backdrop for romantic and vintage-inspired pieces. Experiment with different combinations to find what suits you best, and take inspiration from Juliet Higgins’ wardrobe.

Play with Textures and Details: To add depth and interest to your outfits, incorporate various textures and details. Juliet Higgins occasionally incorporates lace into her ensembles, which exudes a romantic and vintage charm. Consider lace accents on blouses, skirts, or dresses to achieve a similar effect. Additionally, explore fabrics such as chiffon, silk, or crochet to introduce textural variations.

Accessorize with Bohemian Elements: Accessories play a crucial role in completing the boho chic and romantic look. Incorporate wide-brimmed hats, oversized sunglasses, and statement jewelry pieces to enhance your outfits. Look for accessories with a bohemian flair, such as feathered earrings, fringed bags, or beaded bracelets. These elements will add a touch of individuality and free-spiritedness to your ensemble. In that case, Juliet only got accessorize with boho style when was about necklaces and we could easily see them in season 2. For accessories she is pretty much elegant and romantic. We can see hair tiaras, for example, with is way beyond romantic.

Layering for Depth and Versatility: Layering is a key technique for achieving the boho chic and romantic aesthetic. Combine different textures and fabrics by layering a lightweight cardigan, kimono, or denim jacket over your outfits. This not only adds dimension but also allows you to adapt your style to different weather conditions. Experiment with layering to create unique and personalized looks. This is something you won’t see Juliet wearing, mostly because she is in Hawaii (you will see layering when it’s about necklaces – season 2). But you can see Perdita doing it a lot! (I told you I would even dare to say she has a bit of boho style, didn’t I?).

Embracing the boho chic and romantic style in your everyday fashion can infuse your wardrobe with a sense of elegance, femininity, and free-spiritedness. By incorporating flowy silhouettes, floral prints, earthy tones, and textured details, you can effortlessly channel the charming style of Juliet Higgins. Remember to accessorize with bohemian elements and experiment with layering to add depth and versatility to your outfits. Let your fashion choices reflect your unique personality and express your inner bohemian romantic.

And that's all. If you read til here, thank you. 🙂 hope you have liked it.
